It is really one REAL OLD legacy.

Should had been replaced a long long time ago but managed to survived for extra decade due to silly MS. MS made their OS installation impossible without it in the era of Win-NT & Win2000. Some drivers installation for e.q. SCSI cards must press F6 key and insert driver floppy disks.

Simulators (adaptors) that connects flash USB drives into floppy sockets of mother boards should be made for this sort of legacy purposes, to facilitate old equipments or studies. The floppy media can really be phased out. Alternatively, some one should write BIOS to allow a portion of motherboard flash memory be used to simulate a floppy drive. Flash memory is cheap today, they should have 8GB on motherboard and act as e.g. bootable drive, and let OS be installed inside.
