How The Poor Die is a masterpiece. Orwell wrote it almost gratis for a small anarchist journal at a time when the success of Animal Farm could have garnered him a much higher payment for such a piece from the US magazine press.

I think Orwell's essays should be required reading for anyone who wants to write about literature or politics without sounding pretentious.
