"Summer in Baden-Baden" is an excellent book. I read somewhere that it was smuggled out of Russia while still in manuscript form and circulated for years among Russian expatriates. Somehow it finally managed to make it into print and the world is better for it.

It's sort of a dual tale concerning a Russian doctor who's obsessed with Dostoevsky and a summer Dostoevsky spent in Baden-Baden, victim of his gambling addiction. Readers of Thomas Bernard's novels will love this book as it covers some of the same emotional ground Bernhard does. I highly recommend it.
