i've worked with the various strands of western esotericism for over 40 years. but i'm a newcomer to the ra material and am still processing the tarot commentaries. imho, starting with the waite deck makes sense. it's clear, it's safe, and has been used enough to have a decent energy field with which to resonate. i agree with the previous post that the crowley deck is about impersonal forces. and that the art is beautiful. but since crowley was known to mislead the unwary, i'd urge caution. have a good foundation first. as for the known history, the oldest deck of european lineage is the marseilles tarot. it was (wrongly) associated with gypsies... an irony since that people were misidentified as egyptian. and it turns out the images really are by way of egypt. something i'd concluded before reading the ra transmissions.

kaballah, hermeticism, and alchemy can be traced at least as far as egypt. and the tarot has features in common with those and can be coordinated with them. indicative of a common origin. anyway, go ahead, work with the images, and let them work with you. if you tire, set them aside for awhile and then return. sometimes insights need time to develop.
