i had known nothing about mirror gazing before this event, so i googled "seeing other peoples faces in the mirror" and learned this was a fairly popular thing. have any of you guys ever tried this?
wander-man, i tried something similar once. there is a yoga technique of mirror-gazing. it is based on a fact of how visual input is perceived by the nervous system. almost as soon input enters the nervous system, it quickly gets adapted. as a practical example, you can put your hand in warm water and it feels warm at first, but the longer you leave your hand in the water, the less you feel it because your nervous system adjusts itself to it.

with the eyes, there is something more specific. the eyes are continually moving, even though we don't even notice it. those tiny movements are called "nystagmus," and our vision depends on it.* (when this system becomes disordered, "nystagmus" is also the name of the disorder. confusing, i know.) however, if we train ourselves to sit quietly and not move our eyes, a strange thing happens. our vision starts to fade out. i have done this myself, and anybody can do it. i never got to the next stage.

apparently what happens after that is that whatever you see after your normal vision fades is no longer the result of your physical eye doing the perceiving. people supposedly "see" through their third eye after that. i have never been able to do that, because for some reason i start to freak once my vision fades. (guess i'm just an old 3rd-density mudball who can't deal with the other dimensions. lol)

in a nutshell, this is one experience that is verifiable through regular old scientific research. so your sanity is *not* at stake.
