to find the core of a community let's ask: why be a community.

i'd say the advantages of a community are many as opposed to singular living. it is a lot of work for one person to tend a garden, animals, resource gathering, building and maintenance..... this person might think "i wouldn't mind sharing my resources for a little help around here"

and so, with 2 people they can work half as hard or produce twice as much. the more people you add to work the same area of land and share resources and produce the easier work is for all.

now these people share a goal. the goal is to increase and maintain the viability of there situation. whether it is 2 families sharing a home or the above communal farm, pooling resources is a common bond.

i'd say organized religion is the best way powers have found to provide a common belief system to the members. "here is the book, this is what it means...." our beliefs are really as unique as we are and so to truly unite people in beliefs seems limiting.

now, we can agree on this and that, but, certainly not that. as long as members can agree to disagree and let each other be free, it can work.

each person needs space to expand there energy. a space to meditate, place idols, do rituals or whatever. it would be easier to have this space on a farm rather than in a 2 family home. beliefs are personal so charish them, share them, and let them evolve.

i'd say, at the core of a well functioning community is:
sharing the goal of community viability and having individual freedom of belief
