hi nancy,
i would say the single most important tip i could give is to work on achieving a good acid/alkaline balance. the modern diet is increasingly more acidic which can lead to all kinds of health problems; in fact many alternative doctors claim that all sickness can be traced to a diet of too much acid.

you can find several food charts for acid/alkaline content on the web, but generally meat and dairy (and some grains) are more acidic, while vegetables are more alkaline, especially green veggies.

you can get some ph test strips, but i don't think you really need them, because most of us are too acidic anyhow, and that's much more unhealthy than being too alkaline.

one of the best ways to boost your alkalinity (which dw also recommends) is daily 'green' drinks, usually a green vegetable powder mixed with water. you can also mix common baking soda with water; 1/2 to 1 tsp to a glass of water to boost your alkalinity.
