i had lived the island life for many years. if you can pass through what is commonly ‘on island’ called ‘the wall’ it does develop you. you become self reliant, self-entertaining and creative. most will not survive the first winter, they ‘go-off’. you never pass up a hitchhiker, (he might be fixing your washer next week). you meet, greet, and talk to all. god help you if even in the most private conversation you say ‘so-n-so is a jerk’. if two cars are blocking you because they have stopped for a conversation you pull out a book and wait. if you say anything you will hear someone snap, “where do you think you are going? you are already here.”
a man by the name of ludwig wrote one of the best overall books on history i have ever read, [please e-mail for title]. he fled hitler and wrote it in santa barbara. he put a quote on the inside cover: “all men are islanders.” problem is that only an islander would understand.
