if we're looking at it that we are going through the process of ascending, and the earth is also, i guess you could kind of look at it at cleansing of old negative energies, to start anew. i know, i know, tell that to the people that lost homes and all.

i've had a gut feeling that the ca wildfires and hurricane katrina are part of mother earth and the "great cleansing" process, sort of a premonition or a wake-up call of future events. in both situations, there was ample time (in most cases) to find safe ground but some chose to stay behind.
