bob and dc forum -

although this doesn't "fit" with the latest posts to this thread, i thought would share an incredible experience with you all. earlier this morning i attended the return of cowee mound to the eastern band of cherokee indians. this area was well-known as a center for congregation, trade, and government, much like any cultural center of indigenous people. it is said that cowee was well known in london in the late 18th century, as much, or more so than any other area in north carolina. the area was preserved by the families throughout the centuries because of its "spiritual significance" and through hard-work and patience, was finally returned to its rightful owners.

it was with great honor to be able to attend such a historic and rare event. the "electricity" was in the air, if you know what i mean. in all, 71 acres was returned to the cherokee people and the area will be preserved for future generations as there are strict restrictions to "development", so to speak. the ceremony included several speakers including the present chief of the ebci, who spoke powerful words. upon completion, a group of cherokee men performed a ritual dance, which until 2 years ago, had not been performed on that ground since 1775!

i wanted to share this with you all as it is an example of "cooperation and reconcilation" with the ebci and the people of western nc that is symbolic of "healing" in these times we live. as stated during the ceremony, "this event marks an occasion where history serves to bring people together, not drive them apart". i hope to hear about more events like this in the future, as it was "good for the soul" to observe and experience such a thing. hope you enjoyed the story. :d
