i've never dared taking melatonin because i've hung out with too many people who took it for jet lag and their behavior spooked me. i've heard that the amino acid tryptophan is a hormone precursor that can promote sleep, maybe its related to melatonin somehow. foods rich in tryptophan include turkey and sesame seeds.
you may have encountered this and i am not disbelieving you here but i have suggested it to a few of my friends and family probably about 4 total and non of them of had any problems as far as they tell me. a couple said it makes the sleep cycle feel a bit different but doesn't mess up the timing.

i also personally havn't noticed a different in moods or behavior but i am sure it could tweak it out some to some people as with many drugs especially the ones that tie into sleep.

i also just read an article about melatonin at wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/melatonin (which they recently covered and extened) which shows a lot of what seem to be positive effects of this as well and am glad i have been taking it occationaly. more research seems to be carrying out now on this so hopefully more positive results will come in.

getting back on dreaming i also have noticed you can find or have higher entitys/other people consciously in your dreams as well aside from all the subconscious clutter. i am 100% sure on having other people with you in dream state consciously and am about 95% sure about other entitys. the other entitys have shown up as people i look up to and have a more grounded and real energy to them and they have also tought me information that i came to find out is actually quite true.

dreaming has many other capabilitys and i think is essential to the human existance seeing how on average people spend 1/3 of their life sleeping.

but yes as you said earlier the most important key is conscious action. ahh free will and choice are always essential. keep going.
