when you notice the chaos and things that could not happen in the waking state it can also help you become lucid.
it is funny, your sentence starts with "when you notice..." and ends with "...you become lucid." to me, noticing and being lucid are one and the same thing. in essence you are transferring the difficulty of becoming lucid to the difficulty of noticing. first the question was, "how to become lucid?", and now it changes into, "how to notice?". it is still the same question.

although you are right that whenever one sees something that isn't supposed to happen, like seeing a pink elephant, one is probably in a dream state. however, the realisation is quite difficult. i have seen millions of abnormal things happen in the dream state, but they didn't made me lucid. for instance, last night, my grandma was there, which is quite strange since she is 9 feet under (dead). it didn't made me lucid though.

but then what does?? positive affirmation sometimes works, that is, concretely, telling yourself that you will remember your dreams and that you will become lucid, etc. it works great, it was my gateway into lucidity. but it only works to a certain extend. it only works if you are just an inch away, but for most of us, we are miles away. we first need gross techniques before using subtle ones.

the first step is realising what doesn't work. drugs don't work, which includes cigarettes, coffee or just anything in excess. sleep deprivation doesn't work. stress doesn't work. well, i bet most of us are familiar with the list.

after you are physically healthy, which means that you can get into a good sleep without your body having to compensate for all the bad things you done during the day, you need to get mentally healthy. if you are in a dream state all day long, dreaming about what kind of nice car you will buy in 10 years or how spiritually advanced you will be, you will be in an even deeper dream state when you are dreaming. in essence, any prolonged thought about the past or the possible future is to be considered dreaming. ofcourse, it is sometimes good to reflect on the past or to see the future possibilities, but don't do this 24/7.

every time i see/hear people talk about being lucid in dreams, i never, ever, hear them talking about being lucid while you awake. we have this collective association that whenever we are awake, we are lucid and we are not dreaming. this is wrong, it is perfectly possible to be awake and to dream at the same time. in fact, most of us do this 99% of our time. therefor, in order to become lucid in the dream state, become lucid in the waking state. it is as simple as that. lucid dreaming happens automatically whenever one is sufficiently lucid in the waking state.

p.s.: it applies to remembering dreams as well.
