My biggest problem with recreational fishing is the disregard for the fish as a living thing. Because they can't scream or show emotion, people can ignore it being a living thing feeling pain.
I'm not sure where you get that from SB. It's far from the truth IME. Fish caught for food are usually killed quickly and put on ice ASAP. As I previously mentioned there are numerous techniques to reduce hook injuries. Thanks to people In the fishing media like Rob Sloan, Steve Starling, Ron Calcutt and who could ever forget Rex Hunt, anglers are more educated than ever before on proper handling and release procedures to minimise stress on the fish. This is ongoing and preached vociferously in the myriad of TV shows, books, magazines and DVDs. There are still bogans out there. There always be bogans. The majority of anglers do the right thing. They release undersized or inedible fish carefully.

Humans have been fishing with lines and hooks for at least 16 000 years with evidence of taking large pelagics 42 000 years ago www.nature.com/news/archaeologists-land-world-s-oldest-fish-hook-1.9461. This was likely to be with hook and line. While we now have nice graphite rods and braided line, the basic technology hasn't changed. I'd rather catch and eat my own fish which has lived it's life in a natural environment than mass produced chicken fed on high protein pellets or trawled/dredged seafood products.
