I think it depends. Your subconscious is a gateway processing center for everything you perceive-everything. So sometimes it'll come from a perception that is physical, (like the pancake commercial you barely noticed) to whatever your nonphysical self perceived in the astral. When you're in that state you can see pretty much anything, including actual guides or entities, some that may be aspects of you, some that may be just whoever happened to show up at that moment.
Part of the fun is finding out, as long as you don't take everything you see and hear as 'gospel truth', so to speak.

Lately I've been seeing a group of people that talk to me (yesterday, specifically). Some are part of the group I always see (or a lot, anyway.) Some are 'new'. I'll have to see if there is any more communication.
