Hello,
I have been reading up on Robert Bruce's work, specifically the PDF on the website, which includes Treatise on Astral Projection, NEW, and other things. I tried using the rope technique to induce a projection, but at some point I achieved different results.
Hi Andy. First off, I love your name. Second of all, sorry it took me so long- your post came in at a time when I had to leave and wanted to at least give you an indication that what happened to you has actually happened to others. I have a post in my OBE forum in which I describe the exact same type of experience.
So here goes:
What happened instead of an OBE was that my body started going into some routine that began with stretching all sorts of muscles (some that I wasn't even aware of!) almost on its own. I could feel what was going on, and could also stop it if I chose, but I just let it go on to see what would happen (I have to admit, I thought it was the coolest thing I had seen for awhile). Basically, the stretching routine lasted about 1-2 hrs (I went to bed at 11 PM), First of all, did you do something besides relaxation prior to doing the exit technique? I have the feeling you slipped into such a deep trance that the exit turned into some sort of mental projection, in which you examined the energetic equivalent of your body and your immediate surroundings. It wouldn't surprise me if you also 'saw' weird Dali-esque things when you did this. So you were projected, but not to the RTZ. Interestingly, I did something similar when I had the same experience (not 'same') but apparently the 'same' plane, environment, or consciousness focus, whatever you want to call it.

after which it went from stretching to tracing energy pathways (? - I'm not exactly sure). What happened was that my fingers began tracing lines between the locations of my chakras, as well as rubbing / stroking / pushing on the chakra areas (although I'm not sure - aren't there supposed to be 7 chakras, though I only recall dealing with six?). I'm not sure exactly when this second routine ended exactly because I think I dozed off towards the end (was it 4 AM? I can't remember). I did a similar thing which was open my chakras. When I got to the crown chakra, it was rock-hard. Goes to show that something similar happened to both of us. We slipped into the same 'reality'.

It was an interesting experience, but I'm not sure what was the source of it. I have wanted to project for quite some time, ever since my friend introduced me to the concept back in middle school (I am now a high school senior), but for a while I had almost forgotten about the idea, until I read an article about binaural beats, which reminded me of the brainwave stuff my friend was using to try to get us to project. Some Googling later, I found this site, which really seems to be the one-stop-shop for pretty much anything astral (which of course makes me excited), so I figured I'd try to get back into trying to project again. Well I'm glad you found us, and I'm sure we'll do what we can to help.

Anyway, sorry about my digression. My basic question is - what did I experience? How is it related to AP? How can I use this experience to further my goal of achieving AP?

Thanks and sorry for the long post,
Andy. Ok, now for some basics:
As you know, (if you've read the online works, if not, check out the AD pedia for most of the links to them) there are a few types of projection. Robert (as I) considers them all 'astral projection' but the experience that they encompass varies enough for us to subdivide them as such:
RTZ (aka etheric) the closest to physical reality, as perceived. Not always completely realistic, sometimes the fact that you are perceiving with a purely energetic medium will affect how you see things. Also see 'reality fluctuations' and 'mind split effect'. Something to realize is that vibrations do not always happen. If you are the type that 'gets vibrations' (which would be most people at first) you will probably not get them as you progress. This is frustrating, but goes to show that predictability is not the name of the game here.
As the experience gets further away from what we're used to perceiving, we call it different things- Astral planes, astral environment, focus 12- 27 (I have to go back and look up focus levels, but you can do that, there's a guide here somewhere about phasing and focus levels.) Now here is where most of the environments that are collectively perceived (Shamballa, temples, Akashic Records) fairy kingdoms, and maybe the 'afterdeath zones' are 'located/situated/focused on'. Now in these grades of reality you will get further and further away from what we think of 'the material world' and get into the GodPlanes and finally the Mental Plane. Now the mental plane is a 'place' that is mostly conceptual, where form is not really what's important, and where ideas are expressed in very abstract form. Not many 'go there' and I'm not sure exactly what makes a plane mental except that it's about as nonphysical as it gets.

Now, usually when we have an OBE to the RTZ we experience vibrations, sounds and other phenomena if the transition is conscious. If you're asleep you just 'come to' already out, possibly floating around your room, and do cool stuff like going through walls and other stuff like that.
From the RTZ, if you're ready, you can go to the 'astral proper', and have all kinds of experiences, or go directly there, bypassing the RTZ by either going from a lucid dream or phasing. (phasing is in the AD Pedia). It is possible that when doing the rope technique you slipped into an astral plane and didn't notice. Especially if you 'clicked out' in the process and didn't notice. The fact that you did this for so long leads me to believe this may have been the case.
It's possible that the 'place' you 'went' to is the same place mystics go to when they 'tune in' to the energy body- I can't be sure because my knowledge of specific mystical realms is limited- Aunt Clair may be the person that can clarify this.
However, when I did it I discovered stuff about my energy body that I didn't realize, and it helped me. That you commited yourself to this to the point that you got to tells me you will be able to do this, if you do not become discouraged at not experiencing what you 'expect' to experience. It is my opinion that there are way too many 'experts' out there that tell you more what you can't do instead of what you can, and this experience is one of those. Hard to classify (I think it's in the astral) but didn't happen with an 'exit' that encompassed 'space', but it was a change of focus, so projection did happen- an internal projection. Just not what you expected. Get used to that.
If you want I can link you to my experience that was similar.
