Maybe the trick is 'creating' a visual representation of the rope. Go outside, get a rope and really get into it- not only pull yourself up with it, but look at it, feel it's texture-immerse yourself with it.
Years ago, when I was being attacked, I was having trouble visualizing weaponry, and then I found an old sword someone had given to me years ago, and started practicing- the actual physical contact went a long way helping me with that type of 'recreation' (I'm a 'flowers & birdies' type of girl) And of course, never again needed to use it. .

Ps. if you can't find a way to visualize it, something else (that I had forgotten about) is when you have hypnagogics, ask one of them to throw you a rope- I did this and it worked. And he pulled me out from a hypnagogic airplaine with a hypnagogic rope.
