Firstly, I get a weird feeling, almost like the feeling when you swing on a swingset with your head tilted back all the way.
Don't wait for the vibrations or whatever other indicators you're watching out for. This seems to be a symptom of a deepening trance (the feeling of falling is mentioned by Robert as one of the primary indications trance is happening) and possibly the begin of loosening from your physical body.

All the sudden I could feel myself start to breathe harder and my heart was beating very quickly.
Next time - make a simple test. Try to feel your pulse at the wrist and see if it is fast or slow. If it is your heart center starting to pulse faster, your pulse at the wrist should not go up.

Also, just in case somehow it helps.. I usually lay there for 10 or so minutes and thoughts will run rapidly through my mind and any efforts to make them stop makes it worse.
Forcing the mind quiet is like putting a lid on a kettle. If there is steam in the kettle, it will collect and increase the pressure. This is IMO counter-productive.

If I lay there for the 10 minutes just letting them they seem to go away and I am able to hear the ringing in my head better so I can focus on that and get to the time where my body is basically asleep.
That's way better. Instead of forcing it to shut up you let your mind "run out of steam". That is very good progress, I'd say.

What ringing in your head? Do you have tinnitus?

You can also support this by a progressive relaxation routine like described in MAP.

Take good care,
Oliver
