Neil, it has been my experience that when we project, we look how we percieve ourselves. Liken it to the way we look in our own dreams. When I have been out of body and encountered someone else out of body, they look like their own idealized (or less than ideal) personal image.

Sleeper, I can't answer the energy work question, but as far as projecting, I think it also has to do with how the person identifies with themselves. Some things change quickly in our minds and some take a long time to sink in. For example, my mother quit smoking the year before I was born. However, she said that for the next 20 years, every time she dreamed of herself she still had a cigarette in her hand. I know that a lot of the dreams we have are really OBEs. And somehow I find it very funny to think of my bible-thumping mother astral projecting with a cigarette. Another example would be my great-grandfather. He had the lower part of his right leg amputated when he was quite elderly. But he spent the last 2 years of his life crying out in pain because it still hurt him, even though it was gone. I somehow think he still identified with having the leg and when he dreamed and projected it was there.
