Yes and no.
Visualization involves being in one place and seeing yourself in another. This actually reinforces your being in that one place: In body. But if you can use the power of visualization to feel yourself being somewhere else- imagining a room around you, the door in front, the space around, etc- this type of visualization can be helpful to get out of body, because you can move your point of view 'somewhere else'. So it's not that the ability to visualize is helpful or not helpful- it's how you do it.
So if you feel yourself doing a kata, for example, it'll help you to do it.
If you however, imagine your body going through a wall, as if you were watching it, this is not only not helpful, it can get in the way, because it's easy for it to become a habit.
