I actually just read about this in AD. R.B. says theyre usually just neg's, but they take that shape because that is what most people beleive ghosts and stuff to look like.

Actually Robert says it could be either negs or feedback, depending on the circumstances. You might want to reread the 'mind split' effect, where he talks about it.
