The principle side effect of OBE is to expand one's conception of 'reality'. If your concept was previously very broad then there will be little repercussions. If you previously held a narrow (and incomplete or incompatible) view of what you see, then your model of reality will come crashing down. Depending on whether or not you are ready, this can be liberating or devastating (psychologically). Learning that the universe is much larger than you thought (making you much smaller) can also be hard for your ego to take.

While energy skills are not strictly speaking required for OBE, they greatly enhance the experience. They make it richer, longer, more reliable, and more understandable. It also tends to allow for a greater range of activities and destinations during the OBE and also more easier to remember. As discussed elsewhere, the dangers of OBE as far less than they seem. Most of the perceived danger is in fact just your own fear.

One little discussed side effect of doing OBE is that is taboo in most societies. Thus you are not able to openly discuss it without being socially inappropriate. New OBE experiences tend to be profound and exciting which is usually something one wants to share with others. This may cause you to be in 'conflict' with your family, neighbors, church, government, etc; if they have not also had OBE experiences.
