I was doing some energy work before I went to bed, and still had fairly high energy levels when I turned off the light. Twice, as I was relaxing into sleep, I heard odd noises. I can't even describe them, they were just strange, stuff I knew couldn't possibly be real (think city traffic in the middle of the countryside, that sort of "can't be real", though I can't recall precisely what I heard, only that I knew it was completely out of place). Both times it brought me to the surface against my will, though I wasn't freaked out or anything, just somewhat roused.

I didn't notice any particular vibration that I recall. I've never been one to have hypnogogic auditory sensations, though I often experience hypnogogic images.

Does this sound like it might have been astral noise? Or was it just my tired but full-of-energy brain playing games with me?
All of the above. Hypnagogics, auditory as well as visual are created by the brain. When your brainwaves have slowed down enough for you to discern the chatter that is there, you perceive it- it can come from your own subconscious, or you can be tuning into a specific frequency where things exterior to your own personal experience are happening- call it Monroe's "M" Band noise.
I think the more you learn to 'tune into' this the more you'll experience these effects.
