I have had the projected double floating on 'top of me' like a mirror image experience.

For whatever this is worth, I was not projecting at the time I saw these visions. I was in a light trance (or so it seemed) and I wasn't having any other exit sensations. Of course, at the time I didn't know how to try to do it on purpose.
