OBEs can help in healing, self-exploration and exploration of the Universe. Robert Monroe's 2nd and 3rd books ("Far Journeys" and "Ultimate Journeys", IIRC) are good accounts of how OBEs can intertwine with your personal development.

While projection into the Real-Time Zone might seem a bit pointless, it can be a great validator for the OBE experience. To many people the Astral Plane is more interesting, though.
