G'day!

From all you say, what you are seeing is energy. This is often seen as floating sparks that appear and disappear, eyes open or closed.

As for your visualization problem....

Most people have problems visualizing, or believe that they cannot visualize. But visualization is a natural ability that everyone shares and everyone can visualize perfectly right now. Visualization is not a visual kind of skill or experience. You are not supposed to see what you visualize. If you do see something then it becomes a Mind's Eye vision or lucid dream type of experience, and not simple visualization.

Visualization is pure imagination, pure fantasy, and everyone can imagine and fantasize perfectly. A visualization exercise or meditation is exactly the same as a fantasy, where memory is used to build a fictional scenario full of sights. This can be full of sounds, smells, tastes textures and feelings. A fantasy can be incredibly detailed and real; involving total immersion of all the senses. But nothing is actually seen in any kind of visual way. It is not like watching TV behind closed eyes. However, even though it is a no-visual experience, it is still incredibly real.

Memory is an important part of imagination/visualization. Have you ever replayed past actions in your mind, in your mind’s eye, to help you find a lost item? Replaying or recreating events, real or fictitious, like this is pure mind's eye visualization, which is the constructive use of imagination. This is perfect visualization and everyone has the natural ability to do this perfectly right now.

The word [visual-ization] causes problems when used with inner practices like meditation and energy work. This is added to by the visual terms commonly used to describe non-visual meditation type visualization experiences. This also applies to all types of non-visual extrasensory perceptions. This is worsened by people, whom do not actually see anything, using visual terms like "I saw", "I see", "I am seeing". More accurate terms like "I sense", "I feel", "I perceive", or "I am imaging" would be more accurate and less confusing.

A small percentage of people, however, will actually see things visually in their minds eyes during visualization exercises. This often happens where deep physical/mental relaxation is involved. This produces the mind awake + body asleep state (also called the ‘trance’ state). This state can activate visual psychic abilities, and the dream mind can also become active. Some people will experience clairvoyant visions or have awake lucid dream type experiences while in this state. And some people are just naturally gifted with visual clairvoyant ability. But students should never assume that these minds eye visual perceptions are the norm.
