Yes, projections take a lot more energy out of you than regular ol' dreaming. I think partly it's that your conscious mind is still 'on', when it's used to more 'off' time, and all that energy-body generation takes energy too. Plus, if you visit the lower astral the drain can be much more dramatic. But in general, all projections are energy-intensive, except maybe remote viewing.

When I project I either need more sleep, or do it after having a full night's sleep. And even so I do end up groggy and tired.
