Since the trick to OBEing deliberately is mainly awareness, I'd say that your reports of dream recall and heightened awareness are a good sign. To combat the 'falling asleep' effect, you should:
Do energy work- it does wonders with your 'staying' power-
And, make sure you're getting enough sleep- if you are overtired then it's very difficult to stay aware.
A trick that works for me is to get up early in the am, after getting nearly all my hours, and then try to project. You go into trance fairly quickly and can perceive the separation symptoms better, so you can control the projection better.
