Interesting question.

When I stare at an object for a long period of time, I see what I consider an afterimage or retinal fatigue. I see this as an unwavering color hovering next to or superimposed over the object.

When I see an aura, I see dancing flames of color around the object. I believe this is what the alchemists meant by their "secret fire" since it surrounds everything by we rarely see it. When I look at people, I often see a "mist" close to their body. It looks like a fog and is the first thing to catch my eye. Next, I will see a clear flame next to their skin and then colors will appear beyond the clear flame. These colors cannot be afterimages because they are not the lime-green contrasting color for pink skin. For example, my hands are often bluish-purple.

I agree .The true auric colour is not the retinal staining incurred through staring . This is a good technique to begin seeing auras though as you will notice if you stare at a bright coloured object and then look away or back to a white wall or to the object again doing any of those techniques you will get a white auric wake and this is true energy . It is not the correct colour but it is a beginning and we can then see the auric wake begin to pick up colour by training the third eye instead of the physical eyes to look in this area and to percieve energy .

hmm....my hands are always orange
The primary hermetic colouring of the right hand itself will be orange. That is the colour of the limb not the energy around it which continues to fluctuate with health , activity , surroundings , mood , etc . The limb colour will not fluctuate like this . It will remain static until one moves to the next stage . Orange also appears in the Giant Works like this ;

colouring up 25 to 75% of the body for a stage .
