One technique I found useful for stopping mental chatter is the bubble method. Each thought is a bubble floating upwards in your mind's eye. All you have to do is pop the bubble (with the thought in it) before it has chance to rise...and before you ahve chance to recognise what thought the bubble contains.

That's my two pennies worth.
