I imagine it has to do with how much people corrupt their children with materialist crap. Once the kid believes the things they can do are either imaginary and pointless, or bad and dangerous, they'll stop doing those things (because everything bad the kid does has consequences). If such behavior is considered normal, or even encouraged, it will develop as it should.
