The mention of the
cone of silence reminded me of a couple of Get Smart moments at work. I park at one end of a building where I work
in the far end. In the hallway I have to walk through are several fire doors, which are usually in a closed
position, and a secure door that I have to slide a card through a reader to open. On numerous mornings, I have
caught myself humming the Get Smart theme as I walk through all these doors in this long hallway.
The other
Get Smart moment is when I witness people in adjoining toilet stalls in the men's room holding a conversation about
work. That makes me think of our version of the cone of silence.
I think my favorite COS moment on the show
was when they unveiled the portable cone of silence, two bubbles that locked over either person's head with a tube
between. It didn't work any better than the original version.
An interesting sidebar, I read somewhere that
the writers of the show were investigated by American agencies more than once because their screwball devices were
close to actual spy tools that were in use or in development!
