We cannot gauge how bad things are over the number of yolas in the ocean today. People have been doing this for YEARS. There was a somewhat downtime for a little while, but right around the time that Leonel came into power there was a another rash of yolas out there. This is nothing new. There have been other stories on it before, this was not the first one either.

I agree, these governments have bigger fish to fry (or oil to get) the DR has nothing they need, thus nothing "they can do about it" - same goes for Haiti.
You still don't get it. These are record numbers, which means it has never happened before in this magnitude, making it new...not "This is nothing new".

And yes, you can gage how bad things are over how many people are fleeing their homeland. How can it be anything but a direct correlation?
