I don't follow. I think clay was a foregone choice for a US tie. It's easily the US' worst surface while still being a good (great?) surface for Fed, etc. Fed is probably the current world's second best clay court player still. Choosing a hard court would seem to me to provide the US the best chance to win or at worst provide a neutral benefit... and why do that when you have the choice of surface/venue?
