I kind of understand it if they had a prearranged commitment to Kitzbuhel (I've not checked the details). And Philipp only came by his Olympic place relatively late on.
Kohlschreiber also had to play two matches in one day because of rain there at some point. If you have an injury and it's bad weather... not a god idea anyway.
I don't know if the thought came into play at all in staying in the draw at Kitzbuhel, (and why he played doubles, I'll never understand), but for the first time in his career, at the age of 28, Philipp is a Top 20 player, thanks to the ranking points he earned this weekend. Did that factor into his decision to remain in the draw? I don't know, but I'm sure there's a lot of pride in being able to say that when you look back on your career.
