I think he might have done it to have a good hard court season. He's number 16 right now which means he will be seeded for Toronto. Still, he had a decent shot at the Olympics with his draw. If he had manged to get past Ferrer then he might have been able to make the semis or get a bronze considering that Del Potro is not so hot on grass.
