This seems very surprising, particularly 1) in an Olympic year when 2) these two have been playing doubles together for some time.

I may be recalling this incorrectly, but I thought that pairing wasn't going so well in general and that they hadn't really teamed of late. Unless I'm mistaken they didn't take a set the last two times they teamed in davis cup. One of them was a horrible 6-1 6-2 6-0 loss (not sure about the exact order, but they took only 3 games). I got the impression somehow that the doubles relationship was somewhat frosty.
