Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Fixed blades are always ready to be used without the need to unfold them, but a pain to easily conceal. Folding knives are so much portable. Ones with locked blades are as close as you can get to having a fixed knife.

I don't conceal knives if I carry one on me, if you're thinking of self defense someone is less likely to mess with you if they see a big fixed blade on your belt.
