I think the biggest problem is now the old orthodox 442 formation is outdated, or at least England's style is too inflexible to account for it.

Look around the top teams, Chelsea play 4-4-2 BUT they have Essien, Mikel and Lampard as the Centre Midfielders with Malouda roaming, and Drogba and Anelka up front. Arsenal have 4-3-3, and have done so for a while, we play 4-4-2 sometimes but again it's a flexible thing, and other times we play 4-3-3. And it's well known Barcelona play that way.

Until England truly learn to embrace the very nature of flexibility it will never happen.
