I started my freshman year at Villanova University in September of 1987. My mother coaxed me to try and walk on to the tennis team. I did and I made the 6th and final singles spot on the team. And the Big East Tournament was the following week. I won my flight at the tournament and we finished second overall, the school's highest finish. I beat the # 6 from BC in the finals to clinch second for us. My coach was absolutely ecstatic. And even more unbelievably, I was named athlete of the week in the school newspaper. Here I am, three weeks into my college life, not knowing anyone or knowing if i was going to try out for the team, and all of a sudden I'm a mini celeb. My dormmates took 50 newspapers and cut out my picture in each one and pasted them all over my door. It was outstanding.
That is outstanding.
