McEnroe Edged Out By Krickstein In Delray Beach Classic
John McEnroe threw the kitchen sink at fellow American Aaron Krickstein but it still wasn't enough to reach the Delray Beach final. Krickstein triumphed 6-3, 4-6, 10-3 in a winner-takes-all round-robin match, and will now meet Mark Philippoussis in Tuesday's final.
McEnroe won all five of his encounters with Krickstein on the ATP World Tour, but his opponent's consistent ground-strokes on the high-bouncing Delray Beach courts proved too much.
Krickstein, who will forever be remembered for the classic match he played against Jimmy Connors in the 1991 US Open, ran away with the first set. McEnroe seized the momentum in the second, and appeared the more likely to win, but Krickstein turned it around to race away with the Champions Tie-Break, winning it 10-3.
