Chang beats Sampras and Courier to win HSBC Tennis Cup in Washington D.C.
September 24, 2011 @ 4:03 AM

Michael Chang defeated Jim Courier 8-3 in the finals of the HSBC Tennis Cup Friday night to win the second event of the 2011 Champions Series at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC.
“There was some really great tennis being played out there tonight,” said Chang, the 1989 French Open champion. “Jim was as tough as ever, but I was able to catch some breaks at the right time and win this one.”
Chang relied on a solid service game all night and led the eight-game pro set final match 3-2 before breaking Courier’s serve. He went on to take four of the next five games to win the match, and the evening’s title.

Courier reached the final with a 7-6 (4) triumph over Andre Agassi, who was making his first appearance on the 2011 Champions Series. The two former high school roommates will meet again Saturday night in Philadelphia, with this year marking the 20-year anniversary of their epic battle in the 1991 French Open final, in which Courier came from behind to capture his first major title in 5 sets.
“It was great to be back here again in Washington, and I hope the fans saw an enjoyable evening of tennis,” said Agassi.
Chang won his semifinal 6-4 over Pete Sampras, who had beaten Chang one night earlier in Florida by the exact same score
