The first Asian Hopman Cup was played in 2006. I'm not sure how the 8th spot was handled before that.

I guess they got an Asian nation in.

It's too bad what would be epic - the men's match of a China-Denmark tie is unlikely to ever be played
I think they had a scheme going where two teams would play off for a final "qualifying" position. Thailand qualified and made the final one year and lost to South Africa. Also I think the Slovak team of Kucera and Habsudova qualified and won in '98. The losing play-off team would sub in forties when players had to withdraw.
