I seem to recall a US Open, probably within the last ten years (maybe 2003, from other comments) that had oodles of rain, but is this really the first time that they've lost two consecutive days? Anyone have a good history of weather delays at the majors over the years?
2003 was an absolute nightmare, Martini. Rained off and on for most of the 2nd week. It got so bad that, even when it stopped raining, they could not play on Grandstand for a stretch because the drainage system stopped working.

That was the year that Ai and Skeevy Wonder took three days to play their fourth round match. They started on Monday, and after the fifth interuption of play, got delayed til Tuesday. Then they came out on Tuesday, played 2 games, and it started raining again. Finally on Wednesday, they were able to finish the match - and give Skeevy a couple hours rest before she played Capriati in the quarters that very same day (Capriati had completed her match on Monday, and so had 2 full days rest).

As much screaming as is going on at the USTA's poor job of handling things this year, I don't believe it has yet reached the level of outcry it did in 2003.
