Kim Clijsters has confirmed she will play at the French Open after recovering from an ankle injury.

Clijsters was beaten by Justine Henin in the 2003 French Open final Kim Clijsters has confirmed she will play at the French Open after recovering from an ankle injury.

The world number two strained ligaments at her cousin's wedding in April but resumed training earlier in May.

Clijsters will play the tournament at Roland Garros, which gets under way on Sunday, with her ankle taped up.

The 27-year-old Belgian, winner of the Australian Open in January, said: "Playing is going wonderfully. I am hitting the ball very well."

Clijsters, who is also the reigning US Open champion, added ahead of the clay-court tournament: "Increasingly I am going for it. I am not totally without pain, but the strong tape round my ankle gives me sufficient security.

"The advantage is that I still have the spirit of the past Grand Slam tournaments. If I play well, I can win. Attitude is very important, even though the situation is physically very different."

Clijsters, who has also fully recovered from unrelated shoulder and wrist injuries, has never won the French Open on what is perceived to be her weakest surface, but has twice been runner-up at Roland Garros .
