In 2000, the Indy tournament was still played 2 weeks before the USO. Safin lost the final in a third-set tiebreak to Guga, but he played so well (albeit making a ballkid cry) that I picked him to win the US Open (naively, looking back at it). I had just started a new job, and told a tennis-fan coworker to watch out for Safin, he's winning the Open this year. This person thought I was nuts. Two weeks later, Safin waxes Sampras in the final and I'm the most brilliant person in the office.
BTW, where was the Suicide Pool in 2000???
That smile on his face with the USO trophy is how I'll always remember Marat.
