Is that actually true? Some recent examples of players who were out a long time, did badly at first and then regained their former position?

The name Rainer Schuettler rings a bell, although that's over now.

BTW, not to burst anyone's bubble - I didn't see Jelena's match against Dementieva, but I watched her first round against Sprem. Both played awfully and I was pretty sure Sprem was going to win.
