A Tomic blast for Rasheed as fallout builds over comments David Lewis January 14th, 2009 ANGRY John Tomic, father of Gold Coast star in the making Bernard Tomic, has launched a blistering attack on Lleyton Hewitt's former mentor Roger Rasheed, claiming he is a fitness conditioner masquerading as a coach. Stung by remarks from Rasheed questioning the awarding of a wildcard to his 16-year-old son at next week's Australian Open, Tomic Sr belittled the record of Rasheed, who he claimed was largely responsible for Hewitt's spectacular fall down the world rankings. Speaking from Melbourne yesterday where reigning national junior champion Tomic Jr is preparing for next week's Open, Tomic Sr said: "Roger Rasheed is not a coach, he's a fitness conditioner. "He took Lleyton Hewitt from No.2 in the world to No.60 and I think that (Frenchman) Gael Monfils (Rasheed's latest protege) should be very careful because he could find himself struggling too pretty soon." Monfils, who is to contest the Australian Open, has an ATP ranking of 18. Rasheed coached Hewitt for nearly five years before the pair parted company just over 12 months ago. Rasheed and Tomic Sr have been at loggerheads since Rasheed urged Tennis Australia to sanction both father and son after Tomic Sr ordered his boy to walk off court in Perth last month after being enraged by an umpire not punishing an opponent's foot faults. Rasheed further infuriated Tomic Sr when he said his behaviour in Perth was 'not on' and that Tennis Australia should take a 'firm hand because the situation with Bernard and his father is out of control'. Tomic Sr said that the weight of expectation on his son did not weigh heavily on the boy. "He just has to go and enjoy the ball, hit the ball with freedom and he will fulfil his potential as a top 10 player." http://www.goldcoast.com.au/article/...ast-sport.html
