I'm not at all saying he's actually fit enough to play but he isn't, or that he's faking, or something like that. I fully sympathize with his injury and it's really a pity that the top player won't be in Shanghai. What I wanted to say was that I think it's a bit arrogant for Rafa to claim that he's doing sort of a heroic duty for the ATP by spending his body on so many matches. Others have played more matches in total and not complained (at least publicly) as much.
I think that is your interpretation.

Who has played more matches than Rafa this year? Many have entered into more tournaments, but did not go as deep as Rafa has this year. Also, Rafa's injury is part of the why he pulled out. There is also the mental fatigue he is carrying.
