Serena's long commute for WTT debut

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Three days after losing to her sister in tennis' showcase event, Serena Williams awoke Tuesday morning at her part-time home in Paris. She flew to London, where she had a layover of a few hours, then hopped a trans-Atlantic flight in which she "slept pretty much the whole way.''

Upon arrival in the nation's capital, she made an appearance at a youth tennis clinic and then held a news conference to promote the final duty of her very long day: her debut with the Washington Kastles of World Team Tennis.

"It's kind of weird, but I'm still going,'' said Williams, whose body clock was closing in on midnight at the news conference.

Five hours later, the world's fifth-ranked player showed no signs of jet lag as she pounded aces and service winners against No. 189 Marie-Eve Pelletier. Williams won seven of 10 games against Pelletier in a valiant comeback bid on behalf of the team, but it wasn't enough as the Kastles lost their home opener 22-19 to the Boston Lobsters.

"I wasn't exhausted at all,'' Williams said. "I felt like I could go another two sets or whatever.''

Under a crescent moon and before a standing room only crowd, Williams also played doubles and mixed doubles in her all-white outfit. She and Justin Gimelstob lost 5-2 to Jan-Michael Gambill and Raquel Kops-Jones. Williams then teamed with Mashona Washington to beat Pelletier and Kops-Jones 5-4 in women's doubles.

"It was good to be out here in D.C. for the first time,'' said Williams, who stuck around a bit longer after playing to sign autographs. "It was awesome.''
