I think the Vilma penalty is harsh. It's more of a institutional problem and was encouraged by coaching and management. They should pay the higher price.

Although I've read that Vilma restructured his contract a little while back to make $1 million of his 2012 salary a bonus. So he does get that, but losing a year of playing in his prime is unfair under the circumstances, IMO.
Agreed. That is such a huge penalty. Payton has coached 15 years in the NFL with 5 coming as a head coach. He's 48 and, given his success, could easily coach another 10-15 years. Vilma may only have a handful of years left. So to give them both a year doesn't seem fair.

As a side note, did anyone hear Mike Greenberg talking about this? I agree with him about the player suspensions seeming high, especially for Vilma, but he compared football players to children who can't make decisions for themselves. Does anyone else find that extremely offensive? I'm tired of him acting like these athletes, collegiate or professional, are victims of anything but their own decisions.
